Water Sports in Portugal

Portugal and water sports are inseparable companions. With 1800 km of stunning, wild coastline, this country invites you to dive into a world of adventure. Whether surfing the waves, diving into the depths, paddling along the shore, or simply swimming in the deep blue Atlantic, Portugal's waters give endless opportunities for unforgettable experiences. The ocean here isn't just a backdrop—it's a vital part of a road trip, awakening your senses and immersing you in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature.

That said, water sports are not limited to the salty Atlantic Ocean! There are countless invigorating lakes and rivers in the interior of the country waiting to be explored, and Portugal's reputation for being an internationally acclaimed centre for water sports is truly deserved. Whether you wish to witness the riveting annual surf competition in Nazare, immerse yourself in the azul seas at the majestic caves of Benagil or paddle along the protected Ria Formosa coast in the south, your adventure in Portugal will surely feature a water theme.

Traveling in a van offers you immediate access to numerous water sports, enabling you to seamlessly move between different terrains and locations as the weather shifts. The assurance that you are always near your cosy relaxation spot, complete with a shower and a warm or cold drink after a long day of exercise and sun, only adds to the pleasure of your activities. AND.. if you have rented some of Siesta’s extra equipment with your van, there will be little between you and the sea!

Here we outline some key spots, sports and secrets of Portugal’s magical waters. Whether you're looking to take your sport to a different level or indulge in a new experience, this is the guide for you.

Our top list of the best water sports in Portugal

1. Kitesurfing

Among the many activities attracting adventurers to its shores, kitesurfing stands out as one of the most thrilling. Whether you're an experienced pro or a curious beginner, Portugal offers a variety of perfect conditions and kite-surfing spots that will leave you wanting more. Discover the sensation of harnessing the wind's power, gliding over the sea’s crests, and soaring weightlessly through the air. Why not incorporate this unique experience into your road trip?

There are many kitesurf schools along the south and west coasts, with varied options from intensive week courses to short tasters sessions, or if you know what you're doing simply just hire the equipment and fly! Peniche is a favourite among experienced kitesurfers, thanks to its extensive sandy beaches and geographical location that promises consistent winds. Just outside of Lisbon, Guincho offers reliable conditions year-round. In the south, with the allure of warmer waters, you'll find kite heaven at Alvor and the tranquil inland estuaries of the Ria Formosa, which provide a sanctuary for beginners looking to learn. And of course, why not visit one of Europe’s top kitesurfing destinations, Tarifa, which promises perfect conditions all year round.

2. Wing Foiling

Wing foiling, a thrilling new water sport inspired by the concept of kitesurfing, combines elements of windsurfing, surfing, and kite flying for a unique and exhilarating experience on the water. Just like kitesurfing, wing foiling harnesses the power of the wind to blast you across the waves. By using a handheld wing instead of a traditional kite, wing foiling provides a more compact and simplified setup, making it accessible to riders of varying skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned water sports enthusiast or a curious beginner, wing foiling promises an unforgettable ride amidst the natural beauty of Portugal's coastal waters. Why not experience this on your road trip?

3. Surfing

There is a wealth of information on surf spots and numerous forums that delve into the details of the Portuguese surf scene. With a van, you can explore the entire coastline from north to south, ensuring you don't miss any of Portugal's famous surf spots like Ericeira, Peniche, Nazaré, and Arrifana. It also allows you to quickly and easily catch those perfect waves when the swell is just right in a location just down the road.

Portugal's waves vary with the coastline's geography and seasons, which can influence your surf experience. Do some research to find the best time of year for you, as there's always a spot perfect for your skill level. Generally, the waves are calmer in the summer, providing perfect learning and intermediate conditions and growing into the renowned big wave season starting in November and ending in the beginning of March. Most beaches have surf shacks where you can rent a board by the hour or book lessons. Travelling in a van with a board rented from Siesta lets you get ahead of the surf shops' opening hours and enjoy lush sunrise surf sessions.

*TOP TIP* It's cheaper to rent a board from us than at the beach. Siesta Campers offers a variety of surfboards and wetsuits for all skill levels. If you prefer a less technically challenging way to enjoy the waves, consider grabbing a bodyboard from our bases to experience the thrilling power of the ocean. Contact us if you need any advice on which type of board to rent!

4. Kayaking

Rent a kayak if you prefer to enjoy the waters more leisurely. Take a picnic and observe some rare birds along the way. Most beaches in Portugal offer kayak rentals by the hour or day, making it a great family activity that lets you truly experience the wilderness. A popular spot for kayaking and stand-up paddling is the stunning Benagil Caves. For a quieter day out, explore the protected Ria Formosa coastline, which features numerous small islands and diverse bird and marine life, including flamingos and seahorses.

Portugal also has some beautiful interior lakes spread throughout the country, such as Lagoa da Vela and the breathtaking Peneda-Geres zone. TOP TIP: visit this fantastic gem of a campsite perched on the edge of an amazing wide river, where you can hire kayaks from the shore next to your camp.

5. Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP)

There are many places in Portugal to experience paddle boarding. Use it to explore coastlines, discover hidden beaches, or as an alternative way to reach islands. It can also provide a vigorous workout, combining balance and strength. Alternatively, you can simply play in the water around your beach camp, connecting with the ebb and flow of a river estuary. If you’re feeling particularly zen, try some yoga poses on your board! Fuseta in the Algarve is a beautiful spot for SUP, with its calm sea and deserted islands, while Odeceixe's tidal river estuary offers a heavenly experience. Why not rent a compact SUP from Siesta Campers and tailor this experience to your road trip?

6. Scuba Diving

Portugal's crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life provide an ideal setting for scuba diving. Recent developments in the warmer southern waters include the creation of underwater worlds featuring sculptures, such as the Underwater Art Reef Exhibit in the Algarve. Portugal's rich maritime trading history has also left numerous century-old shipwrecks along its extensive coastline. This site provides a fascinating log of these underwater treasures, detailing their stories and the new marine life they now host.

The towns Lagos and Albufeira are renowned for their excellent dive spots and schools, where you can earn your PADI Open Water Diver certification or simply go on a day trip to try a new underwater experience at the unique dive sites in the area.
