Siesta's retro road trip
ok so here's a few suggestions for a good trip, forget doing all of this in a week just pick and choose. The greatest thing about having a camper is the freedom and choice for you to meander at your own pace. There's so many nice beaches here that everyone's favourite will be different ,so if you don't like one cruise on to the next.

On arrival you can choose to either head East ..Olhão campsite . 30mins from airport. Quite handy and a good option if your arriving after a hectic flight and just want to find somewhere to touch down, sometimes you can just follow us to the campsite as we head that way back from the airport. Then you just have to pop the cork and sit back and watch the sunset..

Or you can head west to the campsite near Sagres . 1hr 45mins most of it on the via infant which gets you used to driving the van. Remember that this road isn't like the M1 and is a pretty laid back drive over to the west coast. Get the ipod on and drive into the sunset. You are then in a perfect area to either hit the surf or just park along the cliff tops and enjoy the cool atlantic breeze, which is heaven in the scorching summer. From here you can explore the spectacular west coast and take in some of the best beaches in Europe. Most of our customers end up over this way at some point.
Heading East
If you choose to drive East then check out Olhão .. the campsite is a well equipped site with a good size pool and nice big pine trees to shade under. Incredible fish market and lively old central town. Boat trips to Culatra , Farol and Armona islands the boat can be caught along from the market to the old port . All differing and interesting.
The next interesting port of call is Fuzeta a lovely old fishing town with portuguese local feel. Take a short boat trip to an undeveloped island with easy access to fantastic beach.(you might have to walk a little during peak summer but not far before you will find a secluded sandy spot backed by dunes ). Quaint fisherman's houses and small cafe /bar/ restaurant. The boat ride is a favourite with the kids.
There is a campsite right next to the port where the boat departs it's often busy but central. Also just a short stroll to a child friendly beach with calm waters if you don't fancy the boat ride.
Bars /cafes alongside the port , also a play park always alive with children.
Square in centre is a lovely place to eat or drink whilst your children play safely around huge palm trees.
Tavira. A beautiful and well restored old town with the river Gilão running through it. One of the most prettiest and unspoilt towns in the Algarve. Check out the castle area and waterfront on both sides . On the opposite side of the river to the castle some great fish restaurant's can be found . Walk back away from the old bridge up to a beautiful square then take a right so you are parallel to the river. walk along until you find Bicas on the right. Its great for good priced fresh fish and a swift service.
Pégo do Inferno waterfalls are well worth a visit before you leave this area .At the bottom of 100 winding steps is a spectacular pool with deep azul water to dive in. They are sign posted from the main roundabout close to tavira which joins the A22 motorway. If you get there early in the morning you can have the whole magical lagoon and waterfalls all to yourselves.
If your heading West on arrival
Hire a surf board from one of the many surf shacks ( Alzejur, Sagres, Amado ) more details available in our in-van guide books.
Lagos, this is a pretty town worth exploring .The nearby campsite is good and it is a good town to enjoy a night out in with a young surf crowd .Lagos is surrounded by some spectacular beaches with amazing rock formations and caves . A great place to explore the coast from the sea with one of the many available boat or kayak hire companies.
Sagres. The most south westerly tip of Europe. Interesting sleepy town with a mexican feel to it. Some cool surf bars and surf shops around here . The campsite is a little out of town but well equipped and not too far from the tonal surf beach.
Meander up the west coast and hit some of the following Siesta favourites: Praia da Bordeira, past Carrapateira turn left. Here you will find a lovely estuary spilling out onto big sandy beaches with lots and lots of space. The coast road round the rocky headland is a spectacular drive and you can park around the cliff tops here making a spectacular backdrop to sit and dine.
If you are into surf you cannot miss Praia do Amado and Arifana which has quite a long wind down to the beach and lots of surfers. Here the surf offers clean consistent breaks pretty difficult to drive right down to the beach.
Monte Clerigo is a peaceful perfect haven for children ,lots to do with a stream running through the beach. Get here early if you want to park right next to the beach.
Praia do Amoreira is one of our top favourites and the kids love it here too. It has everything from interesting rock formations, a fantastic beach as the tide goes out leaving sandy pools and ripples and a wide river spilling out to the sea. Further up the estuary you can find sandy dune edged beaches alongside calm waters. There is a spacious and cheap campsite with trees and a swimming pool a few km's from the beach. Just outside Aljezur.
Driving back
If you fancy exploring inland Algarve for completely different scenery ,take the mountain road to Monchique and treat yourself to a dip in the thermal healing springs. Then continue on the winding road towards picturesque Alte where you can sit and drink a coffee in the quaint square and catch the local horsemen parading on their lusitania stallions. Finally one last dip before you get into the hustle and bustle of the airport and just a mere 5 minutes drive from the airport you will find Faro island which is is a gorgeous long beach . Busy in peak summertime especially saturday, but fantastic to visit all year round with its easy parking just 100 metres from the waters edge.
