The Algarve, our base is the southernmost region of Portugal. It is separated from Spain by the Guardiana River and from the Alentejo region to the north by 2 mountain ranges, the Serra de Monchique and the Serra do Caldeiråo.
Although it may look small on the map there is great geographical diversity within this region. The Algarve is not just about long stretches of perfect sandy beaches. It also has mountains, lakes, waterfalls and vibrant towns. Its character has been influenced by its close proximity to Africa and its Moorish occupation, which has had a lasting affect on the regions architecture, art and agriculture.
You can discover peaceful historical towns and escape the usual tourist bustle in isolated villages along the Guardiana river.Visitors from February to June will witness a riotous eruption of colourful wild flowers.
Of course, most visitors are interested in the spectacular coastline which is a treasure trove of golden cliffs, caves, small sheltered beaches and long vast expanses of sand. The West coast has a well earned reputation for being a surfing mecca. Here it is very easy to find good surf schools and board hire, as well as dramatic cliff tops to park on and watch the sunset over the surf.
The Algarve is infamous for its stunning weather and boasts a massive 280 days of sunshine a year. The lack of summer rain and warm winter sunshine makes it perfect for camper life all year round.
